The Power of Meditation

One of the most difficult tasks to master is to control your thoughts. The mind wanders fast and loose and the task of focussing on just one pure thought can be challenging.
Mediation is one of the most accessible of tasks as you can do it anytime, anywhere without anyone (unless you want a group meditation). It sounds easy but it's not really.
Many a fine exponent of meditation has released a book from time to time about the power to be gained in mastering your mind. When we actually get down to meditation, we find it is nullifying because the mind wanders in a hundred different directions.
And we end up saying, "Oh no, I simply cannot meditate. It's not for me."
That is truly the saddest aspect of meditation as people speak of it resignedly. The real challenge is not in trying to master your entire focus but in sitting there and trying. The act of trying in itself is an accomplishment. Imagine the scenario where someone tries, unsuccessfully for a few minutes with all the distractions that usually beset him and someone who does not try.
The difference between the two is the power one achieves with persistence. Just sitting there, while valiantly trying to curb one's thoughts as they wander into the murky depths of one's seething mind can in itself be an accomplishment. One should take pride in trying after all. There could be a few seconds of focus during that time and that makes a world of difference. The mind receives some lucidity during those few seconds and that will be vastly instrumental in clearing the cobwebs cluttering our consciousness.
The point is in trying. Only those who do not try, fail. The ones who try always succeed. Such is the mysterious power of meditation. And it is one of the most ancient forms of yoga that has lasted thousands of years!
